Church of San Sebastián

(Calle Atocha, 39)

Lope de Vega's funeral and burial took place in this church in 1635. However, his remains were left in a common grave for lack of payment by the Duke of Sessa, for whom Lope had worked as a secretary for more than twenty years. The Duke of Sessa acted as a sort of protector of the poet. The poet's father and one daughter were also buried here. San Sebastián is, even today, the headquarters of the Confraternity of the Virgen de la Novena, which has been protecting and helping Spanish actors since 1631.
